How do I tell if a problem is due to abrasiveness or due to hardness of the rock?

If the cutting tool gets gradually and uniformly smaller, with no pronounced scratches on the surface it is the case of abrasive wear.

If the tool surface shows deep scratches, or chips and dents, then the problem is that the rock is too hard for the tool.

In both cases the solution lies the choice of suitable tool material.
